Bio

Aliayta Foon-Dancoes is an award-winning Canadian violinist, composer and interdisciplinary collaborator. She regularly works with the London Symphony Orchestra, BBC NOW and 12 Ensemble, and has performed at the Musikverein, Wigmore Hall, Elbphilharmonie Hamburg and the Philharmonie de Paris.

Projects and Exhibitions

Aliayta Foon-Dancoes has performed with ensembles including the London Symphony Orchestra, Victoria Symphony, Sidney Classical Orchestra and the Galliano Ensemble. As a former member of the Echea Quartet, Aliayta has been aired on BBC, CBC and NPR, and won prizes including the International Anton Rubinstein Competition, the Paris Biennale’s ‘Tremplin’, and the Royal Overseas League.

Recent Works

Aliayta’s recent work includes the BBC Proms, a collaboration with Patti Smith and Pathway to Paris, work with Max Richter at the Barbican Centre, and performances alongside Patrick Watson at Live At Lost River.

Current Projects

  • apart__together - The project was formed by filmmaker/writer Maggie Hope, and violinist/composer Aliayta Foon-Dancoes. It started as a remote, collaborative project where the Vancouver-born artists could process their experiences of self isolation through art creation.

  • THIRTYMINUTES - An interdisciplinary collaboration between violinist Aliayta Foon-Dancoes, visual artist Paul MacIntyre (both London, UK) and musician/composer Liam Ross Gibson (Nanaimo, Canada). THIRTYMINUTES will be shown during [From Boom To Bust][btb], SUBTEI's exhibition during [48h Neukölln 2020][48hnk_2020].

Awards and Prizes

Aliayta was a prize winner in the Vancouver Women’s Music Society’s competition, and won first prize in both UVic’s Bach Competition and Concerto Competition. In Vancouver, she studied with Andrew Dawes (Orford and Tokyo Quartets) and then at the University of Victoria with Ann Elliott-Goldschmid (Lafayette Quartet). She holds a Master's degree from the Royal Academy of Music and has completed Chamber Music Fellowships at both the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal College of Music. This Fall, she will be starting a PhD at Princeton University.
